SUNDAY AFTERNOON CONCERT

SUNDAY 2nd April at 2pm
St Georges Church Thames

JAMES BROWN   Pianist

James was born and educated in Auckland. He had success in piano competitions there and in other centres including here in Thames, gained several diplomas in piano performance and completed a B.Mus at Auckland University. He also trained as a secondary school teacher.
James then furthered his piano studies in England on a Queen Elizabeth 2nd Arts Council grant and on his return to New Zealand performed extensively as a soloist and accompanist in recitals (including in Thames), on the concert programme of Radio New Zealand and on several occasions as a soloist with St Matthews Chamber Orchestra in Auckland.
He now lives in England where he continues to perform regularly and teach piano.

Thames and the coast are special to James. His parents lived for some years at Te Puru and James almost always spends time here when he comes “home” to New Zealand for a visit. He loves the area and is always very excited to perform here.
The covid pandemic resulted in James being unable to travel to New Zealand and perform here in 2020 or since then, and he is naturally really looking forward to coming this year 2023 and performing in his beloved Thames.

ABOUT THAMES

Thames is conveniently situated only a ninety minute drive from Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. In the late 19th century, Thames was one of the largest towns in New Zealand - built on the pioneering industries of gold and Kauri logging. Today, its colourful history is still alive in the many hotels, buildings, museums and activities found in the area.
Thames has a population of approximately 7,500.

Our Supporters

The Thames Music Group has always been extremely grateful for the support of St Georges Church for the continued use of their beautiful church.
We are grateful too for generous grants from Creative New Zealand, the Thames Coromandel District Council and the Waikato Community Trust which help in paying for professional performers, and with the upkeep of the piano, but most of all we are grateful to the people of Thames and our wider Coromandel community who have supported us over the years, and who we hope will continue to do so.
