Nichola Genn Harris

Sunday Concert prices

Combining bass, alto, concert flutes and piccolo with taonga puoro and electro-acoustic backing tracks, Nichola will present ‘Soundscape Aotearoa’. With music almost exclusively by New Zealand composers such as Anthony Ritchie, Peter Adams, Helen Fisher, and Martin Lodge, the programme depicts our landscape, our history, and our culture, and highlights the uniqueness of the language of Music in New Zealand, with its fusion of Western Art Music, cross-cultural inspiration, and the sounds of our landscape.
Nichola comes from a musical family, and considers herself lucky to have been associated with the Nelson School of Music at a time there were two strong principals, and a number of strong teen musicians. “Not only did Mum and Dad make sacrifices so that I could hear the best musicians touring through Nelson, but there was a huge culture of performance and I had the opportunity to play with the best local musicians, as well as some visiting musicians.” She went on to gain degrees at the NSW State Conservatorium of Music, University of Canterbury, and Otago University and holds Fellowships from both Trinity College and the Royal School of Music, in London.
Looking for a new challenge to keep her brain occupied as she finished her PhD Nichola enrolled in a Māori language course, which ultimately led to a new passion. She has joined a growing number of musicians using taonga puoro, and while she does not consider herself an expert in these, she enjoys sharing her journey of discovery with these instruments, and often uses them in combination with her Western flutes in performance. Together taonga puoro and her four flutes create what she laughingly refers to as her ‘one man band’ that she will perform with as a part of the Thames Music Group Sunday concert series in October. |
Nichola Genn Harris is a relatively new import to the Coromandel area. Born in Nelson but spending thirty-five years bringing up a family in Southland, she shifted to Thames – where her maternal grandmother was born – in 2021 as she took on the position of HOD Music at Thames High School. As she finds her feet in her new job she is becoming more musically-active in the Thames community, having conducted the local production of Messiah last year for the St. George’s Choir, and with new plans on the horizon involving the harpsichord recently donated to the school.

Our Supporters
The Thames Music Group has always been extremely grateful for the support of St Georges Church for the continued use of their beautiful church.
We are grateful too for generous grants from Creative New Zealand, the Thames Coromandel District Council and the Waikato Community Trust which help in paying for professional performers, and with the upkeep of the piano, but most of all we are grateful to the people of Thames and our wider Coromandel community who have supported us over the years, and who we hope will continue to do so.
